Version 3.2.24 – January 21, 2025

About vMedia Versions

You are currently running either the production version or the development version of vMedia.

  • Development (“Dev”) release: available for ‘early adopters’ to test out new features. Installation is completely optional.
  • Production (“Prod”) release: available to the general user base after a Dev release has proven stable. Installation is recommended.

In January 2025, we released a development version of 3.2.23 for early adopters to run and test. It has proven stable and has been promoted to production for all vMedia users. Your current version is displayed in the upper left corner of your vMedia home screen.

Before you install….

  • Required: Please make sure all users are logged out of vMedia prior to installation, including all tools and vMedia components (e.g., Print to vMedia, File to vMedia, Send to vMedia, and Spectrum Importer).
  • Recommended: Do a backup before you begin!

Download

Download the vMedia_Install.exe from the vMedia Product Info page, which is also found by navigating to vPortal > My Vertican > My Products and clicking the [View License Details] button next to vMedia.

  • Production Version
    • Scroll to the Software Download section.
    • Click “Download vMedia”.
  • Development Version
    • Scroll to the vMedia Development Version section.
    • Click “Download vMedia Development Version”.

Install

Please refer to the brief instructions or detailed instructions below.

Brief Instructions
  1. Install the release in a non-production location. That location can be on the same server as the production version of vMedia but, at a minimum, it should be in a different folder.
  2. Run the installer from any computer that has access to the server and to the installation folder selected in Step #1.
  3. Run Workstation_Setup from the installation folder at each computer.
    • A user account that has permission to perform administrative installation rights must be used.
    • A reboot may be required during the installation.
    • Do not bypass this requirement.
    • To use an existing vMedia named user license, the computer or desktop must have an existing vMedia client already installed.
  4. Existing un-upgraded desktops will continue to function properly, but users may receive warning messages concerning outdated or obsolete components. Certain new features may not work until the user’s desktop has been upgraded.
  5. If any terminal servers are in use after a successful upgrade, be sure to run Workstation_Setup at each terminal server to complete the upgrade for terminal-server users.

Install Dev Version

  1. Download the vMedia_Install.exe from the Development Release section of the vPortal.
  2. Install the development release in a non-production location. That location can be on the same server as the production version of vMedia but, at a minimum, it should be in a different folder. 
  3. Run the Development Release installer from any computer that has access to the server and access to the non-production installation folder you selected in Step #2.
  4. At each computer that will be running the dev release, run Workstation_Setup from the installation folder.

    • A reboot may be required during the installation. Do not bypass this requirement.
    • To use an existing vMedia named user license, the computer or desktop must have an existing vMedia client already installed.

Uninstall Dev Version

You can install the dev release 3.2.X and later revert to the current production version 2.9.1.

To switch a computer back to the production release from the development release, a full uninstallation of the vMedia client must be performed, including rebooting the computer. Then run Workstation_Setup from the production release location to re-establish the connection to the production version of the software.

Install Dev Release 3.0.0

Install the development release in a non-production location. That location can be on the same server as the production version of vMedia but, at a minimum, it should be in a different folder.

  1. Download Dev Release 3.0.0.
  2. Run the installer from any computer with server access to the non-production installation folder you select.
  3. At each computer that will be running the dev release, run Workstation_Setup from the installation folder.
    • You must use a user account with administrative installation permission.
    • A reboot may be required during the installation. Do not bypass this requirement.
    • To use an existing vMedia named user license, the computer or desktop must have an existing vMedia client already installed.

Uninstall 3.0.0 and Revert to Production Version 2.9.1

You can install the dev release and later revert to the current production version 2.9.1.To switch a computer back to the production release from the development release, a full uninstallation of the vMedia client must be performed, including rebooting the computer. Upgrading/Installing

  • Download vMedia_Install.exe from the Production Release section of the vPortal and place it in the local drive of any computer that is currently configured with vMedia. The installer should automatically detect the previous version and offer to upgrade the software. If this is the initial vMedia installation, select the desired network installation folder when prompted.
  • Run the Production Release installer from the downloaded location. If upgrading from an existing version, confirm the suggested installation location matches the existing vMedia installation folder. Administrator rights are not required for this step. However, all users must exit vMedia during this portion of the installation, which should take less than five minutes to complete.
  • Run Workstation_Setup contained in the vMedia network folder at each computer. A user account that has permission to perform administrative installation rights must be used. A reboot may be required during the installation. Do not bypass this requirement.
  • Existing un-upgraded desktops will continue to function properly, but users may receive warning messages concerning outdated or obsolete components. Certain new features may not work until the user’s desktop has been upgraded.

New Features

  • Spectrum Importer Zonal OCR Recognition.
  • Major redesign of the search results grid. New tagging and group control functions.
  • Drag-Drop from the search results grid to external applications. Note: Users will need to be a member of the Power Users tier or above to make use of this media exporter.
  • Outlook integration. SendTo vMedia can now be enabled on the message pane context menu and functions for single and multiple selected messages.

Administrative

  • New MSI-based self-contained workstation setup is suitable for unattended installations using Windows Update and other enterprise deployment systems like GPO and System Center Config Manager.
  • Enhancements to the UI-based Workstation_Setup to support an external configuration file.
  • Workstation_Setup has been enhanced to relax the reboot requirement when upgrading from recent versions of the driver. Also added a new administrative option to bypass upgrading the printer driver on existing workstations.
  • The vMedia core, print to vMedia, Send To vMedia, and Workstation_Setup programs now contain a commercial-grade digital certificate to confirm authenticity and prevent tampering. The digital certificate can be viewed by selecting the Digital Certificates tab in the file properties for each executable.

Bug Fixes

  • Attempting to view or print immediately after canceling a deletion request no longer throws an error.
  • Media Importer works with the latest version of Print to vMedia.
  • Replacing pages where some of the pages should overwrite now works correctly in all cases.
  • Export2CM enhanced to fix a FD in the SQL Numeric field handling routine.
  • Fixed Kofax interface scanning displays a debugging window on module entry.

Known Issues

  • The new key issuance feature when using SQL Server 2012 or newer relies on the SQL SEQUENCING object feature. Currently, a user with db_owner or the CREATE SEQUENCE right needs to save one media object to the database using any method in vMedia. After the sequence is initialized, subsequent media can be filed by users that have only db_datawriter privileges. If a user with insufficient privileges attempts to file the first media after the upgrade, a warning message will be displayed, and the media will be successfully saved with the older key issuance mechanism.
  • DocSplit Version 8 is present in this release, but the available documentation covers the prior version. Contact Client Services for assistance with this new functionality.
  • The Zone OCR features present in the Spectrum Importer, while available for use, are considered experimental and have limited usage documentation. Contact Client Services for assistance with this new functionality.
  • The visual and operational enhancements to the search results grid are not specifically documented in the help manual. In many cases, usage and workflow should be similar to the prior release or self-explanatory. Product documentation will show references to the older user interface.
  • The SendTo vMedia from Outlook documentation in the help manual may not render correctly and/or may be missing referenced screenshots.
