Q-LawE System Requirements

Vertican’s Q-LawE is a true client/server application. That is, some components of Q-LawE are designed to run on a client computer and some components are designed to run on a Microsoft SQL server machine (the SQL database). Shared data is stored on a Microsoft file server (some configuration shared application exe and log files).

Q-LawE consists of three components:

  • the Q-LawE Workstation Client;
  • the Q-LawE SQL Server; and
  • the file server.

Q-LawE supports remote computing using VMWare and Microsoft Terminal Server Remote Desktop. Q-LawE is not advised to run via VPN solutions unless it is using VMWare or Microsoft Terminal Server (sharing of screen, mouse, and keyboard vs a pipe approach).

Before you Begin

Ensure the following…

  • Printing Services are available to all workstations.
  • Scanning Services are available to all workstations that need them.
  • SQL Server, File Server, Domain Controllers, and any other equipment hosting data are on the same Domain and Local Network. This means we should be able to contact these machines using your local DNS and authenticate against them using a standard Windows domain account. If you are using a multi-domain setup, then it is required that the domains are trusted.
  • It is important that the “Backend” Servers, Remote Desktop / Terminal Servers, and VDI Workstation all be in the same “Local Network.” As an example, don’t simply host the servers or drives in Azure, and then use a WAN to run the software on your local workstations. While it is possible to run in a WAN configuration, performance and data integrity will suffer to an unacceptable level.

Workstations

Hardware & Software Requirements

  • Processor
    • 2 GHz or faster with two or more cores on a compatible 64-bit processor or system on a chip (SoC)
  • Memory
    • Standard User: 8GB or greater
    • Power User: 12GB or greater
    • Job Scheduler: 24GB or greater
  • Storage
    • 100GB of available hard-disk space
  • Operating System
  • Software
    • Microsoft Word – to open Word documents and to create Word templates.
    • Microsoft Excel – to run the reports created in Q-LawE.
    • Microsoft Outlook – for sending emails from Q-LawE.
    • Adobe Acrobat Reader version 11 or later, or equivalent (e.g. Nitro PDF), for reading PDF files.
    • Supported Operating Systems and Software

File Server

The file server stores application files, several temporary files, Job Scheduler logs, vendor import/export data, and several other configuration files. The file server should also have storage for all Q-LawE documents, whether using the native document system or the vMedia document system. Note: If requested, there are also configuration options available to store all claim documents on a separate file server.

Hardware & Software Requirements

  • Processor
    • Intel® Xeon® X5680, 3.33GHz, 12M cache, Turbo, HT, 1333MHz Max Mem (equivalent or better).
    • Note: Use Multi-Core CPU for file and print services.
  • Memory
    • 16GB or greater
  • Storage
    • Three or more drives for striping with parity (Raid Level 5/5.1 or 6)
    • Solid state drives or Type 15K RPM Self-Encrypting SA SCSI 6 Gb/S. Note: Self encrypting drives provide encryption at rest.
    • Using three 600GB drives or larger delivers 1.2TB of storage, if converting prior software.
    • Plan on a minimum of 50KB of required space per converted claim and each open and closed claim. Add to that your current use of document storage plus future use of 100KB to 1MB per document depending on type of document. Stored letters are smaller, legal pleadings are larger.
  • SCSI
    • High performance controller with hardware-based RAID, cache for improved performance.
  • Network
    • 100/1000Mb or faster
  • Operating System
  • Backup
    • Dedicated Server/NAS/SAN combined with a form of offsite storage. Type: digital, size: larger than your planned hard drive storage.

SQL Database Server

Since the server computer hosts the Q-LawE SQL database and must handle traffic from multiple users, you are advised to consult a qualified system architect to advise on the server hardware which will best suit your needs.

Considerations:

  • How many users do you have today and how many will you have in the future?
  • How many claims – open and closed – will be stored?

Note: The SQL Server database stores account, client, court, sheriff, change history, and hundreds of other related tables used in Q-LawE.

Hardware & Software Requirements

  • Processor
    • Intel® Xeon® X5680, 3.33GHz,12MB cache, Turbo, HT, 1333MHz Max Mem (equivalent or better).
    • Note: Use Multi-Core CPU for file and print services.
  • Memory
    • 64GB or greater
  • Storage
    • Three or more drives for striping with parity (Raid Level 5/5.1 or 6).
    • Solid state drives or Type 15K RPM Self-Encrypting SA SCSI 6 Gb/S Note: Self encrypting drives provide encryption at rest.
    • Using three 600GB or larger drives delivers 1.2TB of storage, if converting prior software.
      • Plan on a minimum of 50KB of space required per converted claim, to cover data for open and closed claims.
      • SCSI: High performance controller with hardware-based RAID, cache for improved performance.
  • Operating System
  • Database Software
    • Microsoft SQL Server Standard or Enterprise (Note: Express edition is NOT supported)
    • Supported Operating Systems and Software
    • The data (SQL Database) should be stored on a separate drive from the OS drive.
  • Backup
    • Backup agents that support SQL server databases are required. Snapshots should be taken as often as possible to prevent a loss of data in an emergency.
